Choosing the Right Tax Preparer Is a Stewardship Decision for Ministers

Clergy face one of the most complicated tax situations of any profession. Ministers are employees for income tax purposes but self-employed for Social Security. Add housing allowances, parsonages, reimbursements, love offerings, weddings, funerals, and guest speaking, and it becomes clear—this is not a job for a general tax preparer.

Selecting a tax professional isn’t just about getting a return filed on time. It’s about protecting your financial well-being, avoiding preventable mistakes, and stewarding what God has entrusted to you.

Start with this question: Do they regularly prepare clergy returns? Not occasionally. Not once or twice. Clergy taxation is different—period. A preparer who treats a pastor like any other W-2 employee is a risk, not a resource.

The housing allowance alone should tell you what you need to know. A qualified preparer should be able to explain, in plain language, how it’s designated, documented, limited by fair rental value, and how it impacts Social Security taxes. If they can’t explain it clearly, they don’t understand it deeply.

Dual tax status is another common trouble spot. A competent clergy preparer knows how to handle SECA tax, Form 4361 exemptions, accountable reimbursement plans, and legitimate ministry-related deductions. Getting this wrong can mean overpaying—or underpaying and inviting problems later.

Good clergy tax guidance doesn’t end April 15. Ministry transitions, housing changes, sabbaticals, and special income events all affect tax liability. Look for someone who provides year-round counsel, not seasonal service.

Cheapest is rarely best. Transparency matters, but so does expertise. The goal isn’t to game the system—it’s full compliance with wise use of the provisions allowed.

Choosing the right clergy tax preparer is a stewardship decision. Choose someone who understands the unique tax world ministers live in—and takes that responsibility seriously.
