Keep Your Options Open

Updated: Nov 22, 2022

When evaluating anything pertaining to insurance risk it’s important to get a broad view and consider all your options as part of making a well informed decision. This logic applies regardless of whether you have individual coverage, family coverage, a group plan, are covered under a spouse’s employer plan, or something else entirely. Unfortunately many insurance organizations and agents only want to show you what they have to offer and will try to steer you down that path.

Understand Your Situation First

The best approach is to work with someone whose main focus is to first understand your situation and then explain all your possible options. The end result may surprise you as the best solution may well be something completely different than what’s in place today.

Look for a Win-WIn Situation

A good example is those who are covered under a spouse’s plan today. While most in this situation don’t even think about coverage options, in some situations it does make sense to evaluate whether that’s the best option. In some cases it’s not, and moving out from under a spouse’s group plan can result in reduced costs and lower out-of-pocket exposures (deductibles etc.) and be a win-win for you and your family.

Again, it’s just part of looking at all possible options to see what might be best for you.
