SS & Medicare

Many people mistakenly think that applying for Social Security is required in order to enroll in and pay for Medicare. This is simply not the case. Many choose to apply for both at the same time out of convenience so that any Medicare premiums (e.g., Part B) can be deducted from their Social Security checks, but this is not a requirement.

If you are deferring your Social Security benefits until later (past age 65) but want Medicare coverage at age 65, you can be billed directly for your Medicare premiums. It is important to note, however, that once you elect to start receiving Social Security benefits, the direct billing is discontinued, and any premiums due going forward will then be automatically deducted from your benefit payments.
