The Great Gain of Contentment

Benjamin Franklin once said, “Content makes poor men rich; discontent makes rich men poor.” That thought agrees with the biblical principle found in 1 Timothy 6:6: “Godliness with contentment is great gain.”

Contentment is one of the keys to financial freedom. Discontentment keeps moving the finish line. Regardless of how much we earn or accumulate, it tells us we need just a little more before we can be satisfied. It robs us of joy, reduces our financial margin, and brings unnecessary stress into our lives.

Biblical contentment does not mean we lack ambition or neglect planning for the future. Scripture teaches us to work diligently, prepare wisely, and be faithful stewards of what God has provided. Contentment simply means that our peace is not tied to our income, possessions, or account balances. We rest in the Lord and trust Him as our Provider.

The BMA America 403(b)(9) retirement plan is an important tool for preparing for future ministry and retirement. Saving consistently and investing wisely can help provide financial security in the years ahead. But a retirement account, regardless of its size, can never give us the peace and security that come from trusting God.

We should prepare faithfully for tomorrow while remaining grateful for what God has given us today. Contentment helps us spend wisely, avoid unnecessary debt, give generously, and keep money in its proper place. True wealth is not found in having everything we want. It is found in recognizing God’s provision, being thankful for what we have, and trusting Him with the future.
