Umbrella Wisdom

Most of us in ministry don’t spend much time worrying about being sued. We’re focused on serving people, not protecting ourselves from them. But stewardship isn’t just about how we give and invest—it’s also about how we protect what God has entrusted to us.

That’s where umbrella insurance comes into play.

In an article in Kiplinger Personal Finance, author Ella Vincent outlines several situations where additional liability coverage may be wise. While not everyone needs it, many of us would be surprised at how quickly risk can appear in everyday life.

Here are five common reasons umbrella coverage may be a wise choice:

  1. You have significant assets to protect. If God has blessed you with a home, savings, or retirement accounts, those assets can be exposed in a lawsuit.

  2. You have drivers in your household—especially teenagers. Auto accidents are one of the most common sources of large liability claims.

  3. You host people in your home. Hospitality is biblical—but it also carries risk if someone is injured on your property.

  4. You own property beyond your primary residence. Rental homes or vacation properties increase your exposure to liability.

  5. You have higher-risk features or activities. Items like pools, trampolines, and pets, or even serving on boards, can increase the chance of being named in a lawsuit.

Umbrella insurance is not about fear; it’s about wisdom. It’s a relatively low-cost way to add a layer of protection over your existing policies.

Good stewardship isn’t just about growing resources—it’s about guarding them well. If you have questions about how you should pursue umbrella coverage, let us know how we can assist you.
