What is your hope built on?

While reading a recent blog from Rob West, President of Kingdom Advisors, he shared a story from Ron Blue that I remembered reading years ago.

Ron Blue once asked a local pastor in Kenya what most hindered the spread of the gospel. The pastor’s answer surprised him--materialism.

But the issue was not wealth itself. It was the constant desire for more—one cow becoming two cows, a mud hut becoming a stone hut, and so on. That simple answer revealed a timeless truth--materialism is not measured by how much we have, but by what our hearts long for and where our hope lies.

Scripture reminds us that money is a tool. In and of itself, money is neutral. But because money touches almost every part of our lives, it often reveals what matters most to us and where we have placed our hope.

I'll close with the old hymn written by Edward Mote, "My hope is built on nothing less than Jesus’ blood and righteousness. I dare not trust the sweetest frame, but wholly lean on Jesus' name. On Christ the solid Rock I stand, all other ground is sinking sand." Whether our eternal life in heaven or our physical life on earth, may our hope be centered on Jesus Christ.
