A Long Obedience in the Same Direction

One of Eugene Peterson’s most noted works is titled A Long Obedience in the Same Direction: Discipleship in an Instant Society. This spiritual formation classic was written over forty years ago.

Like him or not, Peterson’s message of slow, intentional discipleship provides a foundation for sanctification that is counter to our Western mindset of instantaneous results.

When it comes to investing, there is a parallel principle. Ben Carlson shares in A Wealth of Common Sense, "Long run returns are the only ones that matter but short run returns get all of the attention.  Wise investors focus on the long run and avoid allowing the short run to dictate investment decisions."

When it comes to investing, our greatest challenge might be to jettison the impact of our emotions in the short term and focus on developing a “long obedience in the same direction” for the long-term. Our future self will most likely thank us!
