Medicare - When do I need to enroll?

It’s important to know when to enroll in Medicare in order to avoid delays and potential penalties.
If you are not employed and not covered by an employer-provided health plan, you need to enroll when first turning 65.
If you are employed and covered under a group health plan, but the company has fewer than 20 employees, you will need to enroll in Medicare when first eligible at age 65. This is because Medicare becomes the primary coverage for groups with fewer than 20 employees aged 65 and older.
If you are employed and covered under a group health plan and the company has 20 or more employees, you are not required to enroll when turning 65, as the employer group health plan will remain primary.
If you are employed and covered under a group health plan and the company size drops below 20 employees, you will need to enroll right away to avoid potential penalties.
You can enroll in Medicare as early as 3 months before turning 65, and the initial enrollment window lasts until 3 months after your birth month.
