The Treasure Principle

When it comes to money, Jesus poses a poignant question in His Sermon on the Mount. He asks what we truly treasure? Then he adds, “For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also” (Matthew 6:21). The direction of our money often reveals the condition of our heart more clearly than our words ever could.

I think that is why Jesus spoke so often about money. Money has a gravitational pull on our motives and desires. It promises security, comfort, and control and suggests that just a little more will finally bring peace. Remember, money is neutral, and when we ask money to do what only God can do, we place on it a responsibility that is impossible to achieve and result in us losing both joy and peace.

Solomon warns in Ecclesiastes 5 that whoever loves money will never be satisfied with money. Accumulation can bring anxiety, and wealth can even rob its owner of sleep. As I heard Patrick Morley share at a men's retreat--"Money is a wonderful servant, but a ruthless master." It can provide for our families, support ministry, and help prepare us for the future. Yet it was never meant to rule us or bring a sense of security.

For those of us preparing for retirement, this distinction matters. We should save faithfully, invest wisely, and plan responsibly. However, we should view a retirement account only as a resource, not a refuge. As we say often, we trust the Provider not the Provision. A wise financial plan can help us face the future responsibly, but only Christ enables us to face it confidently.

The treasure principle is simple: Our hearts follow what we treasure. When Christ is our greatest treasure, everything else falls in place. Money becomes a tool, generosity becomes a joy, and saving becomes an act of stewardship rather than fear. We can plan diligently without trusting in our plans and rest in the truth that when God is our treasure, we already have enough.
