Three Questions Every Steward Should Ask

Most people think financial planning begins with numbers: income, expenses, investments, retirement age, and tax strategy. Those things matter. But they are not the starting point. For a follower of Christ, the better question is not simply, “Will I have enough?” The better question is, “Am I being faithful with what God has entrusted to me?”

Financial planner George Kinder became known for asking three powerful life-planning questions. They are not Bible verses, but they can help us think more biblically about our time, our resources, and our calling.

First, if money were no obstacle, how would you live? Not in a selfish or foolish way, but honestly: What would you give yourself to? Who would you spend more time with? What kingdom work would rise to the surface?

Second, if you had only five to ten healthy years left, what would you change? That question has a way of clearing the fog. Suddenly, the urgent gives way to the important. Relationships, ministry, health, generosity, and unfinished callings move to the front of the line.

Third, if this were your final day, what would you regret leaving undone? That one gets close to the bone. It forces us to ask whether our calendar, checkbook, and priorities are telling the same story as our convictions.

These are excellent questions to discuss with your spouse. Not because they replace prayer, Scripture, or wise counsel, but because they can reveal what God may already be stirring in your heart.

Retirement planning is not just about leaving work. It is about stewarding the next season well. We are not owners. We are managers. And one day, the question will not be how much we accumulated, but whether we were faithful.
