While we all typically hate getting a bill in the mail, here is an example of when it’s a good thing.
Typically after a healthcare service is performed at a provider’s office or a facility, you can expect to receive two things in the mail or online.
Explanation of Benefits - Commonly known as an EOB, this provides you with notice of the services performed, the date, and the costs, discounts, and amount which the provider shows as your responsibility. An EOB will typically also state THIS IS NOT A BILL. The EOB is notified that this has been submitted to your carrier for processing. Do not ever pay based on receiving an EOB.
A Bill – This will be an actual BILL from the carrier or plan administrator. This will typically state THIS IS A BILL. This is the vehicle that you should use to remit payment for your amount due. Ideally the amount will match the amount shown on the EOB, but again mistakes are made at provider/facilities offices so always wait for the bill which shows the amounts after the expense has been processed by your insurance carrier.
Simple steps like this can help avoid unexpected costs.
