Where Does God Want Me to Give?

ree

A recent article I read at FaithFi by David Wills addressed the need for us to align our giving with the heart of God. That thought stuck with me—because too often, our giving starts with our desires instead of His direction. Instead of asking, “Where do I want to give?” we should be asking, “Where does God want me to give?” True stewardship begins when God—not our personal preferences—is at the center of every financial decision.

In Acts 1:8, Jesus gives a model for generosity that reflects God’s heart: Jerusalem (local), Judea and Samaria (regional), and the ends of the earth (global). God’s plan for giving spans our neighborhood, our state, and the world at large. He calls us to invest in what lasts forever—His Word and His people.

Specifically, Scripture highlights five groups dear to God’s heart:

  1. The Poor and Oppressed – Care for widows, orphans, and those in need (James 1:27).

  2. Christian Workers – Support pastors, teachers, and missionaries (Gal. 6:6).

  3. Family Members – Provide for your household (1 Tim. 5:8).

  4. Kingdom Work – Give toward efforts that spread the gospel.

  5. Special Calls – Obey when God prompts your heart to act.

Jesus said, “Where your treasure is, there your heart will be also” (Matt. 6:21). When we give where God leads, we find joy, purpose, and eternal impact. In so doing, we align our heart and giving with God's.
