Challenging Cultural Norms

This article from Rob West of Faith Fi explains that while we are in the world, we are not of the world, and the way we manage our finances should reflect this fact.

As followers of Christ, we are called to live with a different set of values than the world, and that includes how we handle our money. In 1 John 2:15, we are reminded, “Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him.”

This is a clear choice: we can either adopt the world’s mindset or follow God’s way. Worldly values focus on self-reliance, accumulation, and pride. God’s Word, on the other hand, calls us to generosity, humility, and trust in Him as our ultimate provider.

The world says, “Get more, keep more, and do it yourself.” But Scripture teaches us to give freely (Proverbs 22:9), depend on God (Psalm 23:4), and seek His kingdom first (Matthew 6:33). It’s a radically different approach, but one that leads to eternal rewards.

Jesus modeled this counter-cultural way of living by serving others and challenging the norms of His time. As His followers, we are called to do the same—to replace greed with generosity and to love others in a way that reflects Christ. As stewards of God’s resources, our financial choices not only shape our own hearts but also serve as a testimony to others. Let’s handle our finances in a way that honors God and reflects His Kingdom.
