Consistency Beats Volume Beats Intensity

My fitness coach, Alex Van Houten, drilled a simple but powerful truth into me:
“Consistency beats volume beats intensity.”
At first, it hit me in the context of workouts and training. But the more I reflected on it, the more I realized: this same principle applies across the board—to fitness, finance, and faith.
Most of us in ministry know what it’s like to live in a rhythm of urgency. We push through busy seasons—sermons, missions, counseling, budgeting. But the real growth happens not in the sprints, but in the steady pace.
Let’s break it down:
Intensity is the occasional burst—a long fast, a financial emergency, or a workout you feel for days.
Volume is more activity—more meetings, more giving, more hustle.
Consistency is daily obedience—small, steady steps in the right direction.
And that’s what transforms us over time.
Proverbs 13:11 reminds us, “He who gathers money little by little makes it grow.” That’s why the BMA Retirement Plan emphasizes consistent, long-term saving. One-time gifts are great—but lasting fruit comes from faithful habits.
Eugene Peterson called the Christian life “a long obedience in the same direction.” Whether it’s your time, health, money, or ministry—God isn’t after hype. He’s after faithfulness.
So whether you’re already enrolled in the BMA Plan or still considering it:
Start small. Stay steady. Finish well.
