As we approach the fourth quarter there are a number of important insurance reminders.
Medicare
Medicare 2024 open enrollment is October 15-December 7. During this time participants can make changes such as changing their supplemental plans, joining or dropping a Medicare Advantage plan, and changes to their Part D prescription drug coverage.
As a reminder, initial Medicare enrollment is for 7 months, being the 3 months before the month you turn 65, and lasts 3 months after the month you turn 65. We always recommend enrolling early so your coverage is effective at 65.
Marketplace
Nationwide open enrollment on the federal marketplace www.healthcare.gov is November 1 – December 15 for coverage to be effective January 1, 2025. This same open enrollment period allows you to also change plans and/or add dependents not originally done on time earlier.
A second open enrollment window of December 16 – January 16, 2025 is available for coverage effective February 1, 2025.
Group Plans
Open enrollment for fully insured employer provided group coverage is typically 30 days prior to the plan’s annual anniversary/renewal date . So for January 1 renewals the month of December would be the open enrollment period.
