Seeking First What Matters Most

Peter Lynch once said, “If you spend 13 minutes a year on economics, you’ve wasted 10 minutes.” That sounds strange until you remember who Peter Lynch is. He wasn’t guessing. He was one of the most successful investors of his generation. His point wasn’t that money doesn’t matter—it was that obsessing over the economy usually doesn’t help.
That’s a helpful reminder for us.
We are called to be good stewards, but stewardship was never meant to consume us. There’s a difference between being responsible and being preoccupied. When our peace rises and falls with markets, interest rates, or the latest economic headline, we’ve likely shifted our trust from the Provider to the provisions.
Jesus said it plainly: “Seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things will be added to you” (Matthew 6:33). The order matters. God doesn’t ask us to ignore wisdom or planning, but He does warn us about worry. Responsibility honors Him. Anxiety doesn’t.
Yes, we should plan. Yes, we should make wise decisions. But we cannot control the economy. Markets will rise and fall long after we’re gone. God, on the other hand, is faithful and unchanging.
When we seek Him first, stewardship finds its proper place. Money becomes a tool, not a source of security. Peace replaces fear. Perspective replaces panic.
That’s not neglect. That’s biblical order.
